This program is designed to assist in the daily calculations that a roaster may run in to.
It helps with the following general category calculations:
-
Roaster Capacity...
- Coffee Usage
- Energy Usage
- Roast Cost
- Profit and Loss ( basic calculations )
- Weight Conversions
- Volume Conversions
- Temperature Conversions
Descriptions of sections (tabs) as they appear when the calculator is running
-
Capacity Calcs
-
The Capacity Calcs tab starts to get into some more interesting calculations.
The upper section allows you to calculate capacities based on a given roaster size.
The fields with white backgrounds are input fields. The grey background fields are
calculated values.
Start by entering the roaster size in pounds; use the weight tab to convert if needed. Then
enter the percentage of the maximum load size you would run, for example: 80% roaster
capacity. Which if you are using a 15 kilo, 33 pound roaster would translate into a
maximum load size of 26.4 pounds.
Next enter the average, known or expected, weight loss from roasting. Typically 15-20%.
The next row allows you to try various amounts of roasting time: batches per hour, hours
per day, shifts per day, days per week and weeks per year. As you enter values staring at
the left and working to the right you will see the effects in the grey boxes.
The lower section allows you to work backwards from a known, required capacity, to
determine what size roaster will be required or if your current roaster is adequate.
Select the capacity based on; Yearly, Monthly, Weekly, Daily, per Shift or Hourly. Then
enter the capacity.
You can manipulate the next fields to try various scenarios in determining roaster
requirements.
-
Coffee Calcs
-
The Coffee Calcs tab allows you to Calculate different costs based on brewed and
espresso consumption and costs.
The upper section will allow you to calculate cost per ounce and how many brewed
ounces per pound you can expect. Enter the coffee weight (in ounces) used per how much
water (in ounces). Enter the cost per pound for the coffee. If you are roasting, use the
calculated roast/pound cost. Then enter an estimated waste percentage from either; spills,
old coffee, and loss from grinding. The Cost per ounce and expected amount of ounces
will be calculated.
The lower section is used to calculate expected coffee usage, both green and roasted.
Enter the estimated number of servings for the specified sizes, both brewed and espresso.
The info entered in the upper section will be used to back calculate the amount of coffee
required to make the estimated servings. You will see calculated values broken down by
roasted/ green and brewed/espresso.
-
Energy Usage
average output
propane
-
The energy Usage tab will allow you to calculate energy costs, both Gas and electric. The
fields with yellow backgrounds are again automatically saved as default values any time
they are changed.
Enter values into the white and yellow fields to calculate the energy costs. These
calculated values will be carried onto the next tab for further calculations.
Clicking on the Average Calc button will bring up the following window:
If you manipulate the gas flow to the burner during the roast you can use this to help
calculate the average output to the burner during the entire roast process. You can either
enter the percentage output with the time durations directly or by inputting what the
maximum pressure/flow is and then enter the pressure/flow value for each time duration.
If you enter pressure/flow values click on the Use Gas Pressure toggle switch to enable
the program to calculate the percentage output for each time duration for you.
Clicking on the Propane Calc button will bring up the following window:
This window can be used to calculate the number of hours, batches you can get from a
given size propane tank. Enter values in the input boxes on the left, and the calculated
values will be displayed in the output boxes on the right.
These values are approximate, depending on the exact gas pressure through the roaster at
maximum.
-
Roaster Cost Calc
-
The Roaster Cost Calcs tab is used to calculate the various costs of different packaging
sizes, and equipment recovery times/cost.
Select the packaging size you will use, then enter the green coffee load and the expected
weight loss for the roast.
Enter the green coffee cost per pound and the labor cost per hour.
The three Time fields are based on total time to complete for the batch; total roast time,
total cooling time and total packaging time, to package the whole batch.
Enter the Bag and label costs.
The Energy costs are carried over from the Energy Usage tab.
At the bottom of the window, price per package will be calculated.
You next have the option of entering either the desired margin you wish to make, which
will calculate the sell price; or enter the desired sell price, which will calculate what your
margin will be.
Use the Equipment Recovery Section to calculate how long it will take to recover the cost
of supplying equipment, or to calculate how much to add to the sell price to recovery the
equipment cost over a desired period.
You have three options to choose from: Current Profit/Package, % of Current
Profit/Package or Add to Current Profit.
The Current Profit/Package option will use the difference between the $/Package value
and the Sell Price value, along with the equipment cost and package quantity per
week/month/year to calculate the recovery period. The recovery period will be in the
same week/month/year increment as the package quantity you entered.
The % Current Profit/Package option calculates the same recovery period as the first
option, but only uses a percentage of the difference between the $/Package value and the
Sell Price value.
The third option allows you to enter the desired recovery period, and will calculate the
equipment cost to add to the sell price.
-
Profit/Loss
-
This tab is a simplified calculation of Gross Profits and Net Profits.
Enter Average margins and Total Sales, Gross Profit will be calculated.
Gross Profit is carried down to the next line. If you enter your fixed Costs( lights, space,
heat-AC, etc) you can calculate Net profit.
-
Weights
-
The upper section of this tab will allow you to calculate Green coffee weight, Percent
weight loss or Roasted coffee weight. You first select the toggle switch under the field
you wish to calculate, you will see the green arrow light up. Then enter the other two
values in the appropriate field. Once the values are entered, the selected field will display
the result.
Use the Clear toggle switch to clear all the fields and try another calculation.
The lower section will convert the more common weight units. Enter the weight you
know in the far left column, with the white background. Then move across the row to the
unit you wish to know
-
Volumes
-
You can use the Volumes tab to convert between more common volume units. Enter the
value you know in the left column, and the conversions will be displayed to the right in
the same row.
-
Temperature
-
The Temperature tab will allow you to convert between the four temperature scales most
commonly used. Enter the value you wish to convert in the left column, and the
converted values will be displayed in the row to the right.
